Best places to visit in Agra

1. Taj Mahal – It is UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. One of the seven wonders of the world. It was built by the 5th Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in the loving memory of his beloved wife Arjumand Bano Begum popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal. Situated on the bank of river Yamuna. It was completed by 20,000 workers in 1653. Taj Mahal is closed on every Friday.

2. Agra Fort – After the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is the second most visited place in Agra. It is also known as Lal Qila. It was built by the 3rd Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. It was completed within 8 years in 1573. Inside the Agra Fort there are many places to see like – Jahangir’s Palace, Jahangir’s Bowl, Khas Mahal, Meena Masjid, Nagina Masjid, Diwan-a-Aam, Diwan-a-Khas etc. 

3. Itimad-Ud-Daulah Tomb (Also known as Baby Taj) – It is about 04 k.m. far from the Taj Mahal located left side on the bank of river Yamuna. It was built by the Empress Noorjahan in the loving memory of her father Mirza Gyas Beg, so this is the tomb of Mirza Gyas Beg. It was built before the Taj Mahal in 1628. 

4. Mehtab Bagh – This beautiful garden was built by the first Mughal Emperor Babur in 1530. It is located left side on the bank of river Yamuna. This garden is square in plan, measures about 300 by 300 metres, the place was in ruins until the park was reconstructed. Originally, it was divided into four parts- beautiful white walkways, large water fountains with reflecting pools, and airy pavilions filled with colourful fruit trees. This garden is the perfect place to see the Sunset view of the Taj Mahal.

5. Akbar’s Tomb – It is about 17 k.m. far from the Taj Mahal, located on the Delhi-Agra road. The construction work was started by Akbar during his lifetime and later it was completed by his son Jahangir in 1612. The gateway is covered with floral and geometrical ornamentation with white and coloured marble adorned with four minarets. The tomb can be entered from the beautiful southern doorway which leads to the garden. The main tomb stands in the centre of a vast garden which is enclosed by high walls. 

6. Fatehpur Sikri – Fatehpur Sikri is located about 38 k.m. south-west of Agra, on the Agra-Jaipur route. It is also the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by the third Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1585. Fatehpur Sikri is the place where you will see a lot of things like – Highest Gateway of the world known as Buland Darwaza, Diwan-a-Aam, Imperial Treasury, Panch Mahal, Khwabgah Complex and many more. After Akbar’s death, Fatehpur Sikri soon deserted within 50 years of its foundation, mainly due to lack of water.
